Curry's GOAT Case Gets Shaq's Boost: Is Steph Among the All-Time Greats?

Curry joins GOAT controversy, Shaquille gives support

Stephen Curry's place in basketball history is once again up for debate thanks to a recent comment by Shaquille O'Neal. Shaquille O'Neal, the legendary center and one of Curry's biggest fans, declared that the Warriors superstar deserves to be included in the Greatest Players of All Time (GOAT).

This isn't the first time Curry's talent has been lauded. He's widely regarded as one of the top 10 players of all time and has already been called "the greatest point guard of all time" by some. But Shaq's endorsement, especially his claim that Curry is "much better than me," adds significant weight to that discussion.

Curry's performance against the Celtics on Dec. 19 sparked Shaq's statement. Despite a slow start, Curry exploded in the fourth quarter and overtime to lead the Warriors to a thrilling victory. This clutch performance, combined with his championship pedigree and consistent excellence, fueled Shaq's "GOAT" argument.

However, not everyone is convinced. Some analysts believe that Curry still lacks the accolades to enter the GOAT conversation. They point out that Curry has "only" won two MVP awards and four championships compared to the storied resumes of players like Michael Jordan and LeBron James.

The debate was also fueled by the presence of Kenny Smith, Shaq's co-host on Inside the NBA. Smith was initially surprised by Shaq's comments, but he asked Shaq to clarify and make sure Shaq didn't put himself above Curry. The ensuing exchange further emphasized Shaq's strong belief in Curry's greatness.

Shaq's support for Curry is more than just verbal. He has consistently predicted that when Curry is healthy, the Golden State Warriors will succeed in winning a championship. While the Warriors currently sit outside the top 10 in the Western Conference, another Larry O'Brien Trophy would certainly add to Curry's GOAT reputation.

Whether or not Curry can ultimately join the likes of Jordan and LeBron in the pantheon of basketball's all-time greats remains to be seen. But there's no denying that Shaq's bravado, coupled with Curry's undeniable talent and accomplishments, has propelled this conversation forward. Only time will tell if Curry can further cement his legendary status and secure his place among the NBA's all-time greats.
